Scene Twelve

Tessa was up on the bridge, having gotten the McLarens’ gear settled and them in the cabin aft directly across from Wyatt. Laney Coburn could go next to him aft one, so if the newlyweds made honeymoon noises, Wyatt wouldn’t have to hear it.

The walls were thick enough to block most sound, but occasionally, to hear Auntie talk, you found the right rhythm for a harmonic that echoed through the whole vessel. That or Tessa had hit a certain plateau a few times and left air vents open.

She was the captain. The others could deal with it.

Abigail came forward from the shuttle dock. Normally, that door was locked, but she had a key. Easier than making her walk up and down stairs constantly when she wanted to find Tessa, who was often up here with Fin.

“I understand from Fin and Maru that you’ve almost got a full house, Captain?” Abigail said as she stepped in.

Tessa rose and turned to the woman.

Up until yesterday, Tessa would have said that Abigail was the most beautiful woman Tessa had ever seen. Not anymore. Brianna McLaren was a whole step beyond merely stunning.

Tiny, when McLaren was much taller. Abigail ran maybe one hundred and fifty-five centimeters. Fifty kilograms soaking wet. Brown hair like the McLaren woman, but far curlier. The same perfect skin. The same glacial blue eyes.

“Retired soldier woman from Lorastir and a pair of newlyweds who might have eloped, but I didn’t ask too closely,” Tessa said. “The soldier helped us with some trouble on the Strip earlier. She’s the last to arrive, and then we’re gone, so I’m happy you cut your evening short.”

Abigail nodded.

“Tedious would be an insult to the gentleman in question,” she said. “Perhaps the situation. They almost grow predictable, to the point that I could have had the last half hour or so of conversation alone in my cabin and hardly missed a word.”

“Another one madly in love you with and hoping that his money and connections would impress you?” Fin grinned up at her.

Those two had almost as complicated and interesting a relationship as Fin and Wyatt. In both cases, more siblings than anything. It worked.

“Worse,” Abigail’s eyes got big and excited. “He thought he had a magic penis that would make me fall in love with him.”

They all shared a laugh at that.

“Most men think that way,” Tessa chuckled.

“She only married me for my money,” Fin said with a perfectly straight face. For about a second before he grinned.

“Well, if you aren’t that good in bed, maybe I need to steal her away from you,” Abigail sassed.

“Only if I get to watch,” Fin countered.

“Hush, you two,” Tessa interrupted before they got going.

Worse than teenagers. Or maybe she was just unnaturally old. All the light-years she’d gone and things she’d done.

“So where’s next?” Abigail asked, turning into a far too serious businesswoman for being all of twenty-four years old.

But as she’d said, she’d spent a decade in school learning her trade. Business was a large
